These stylized ceramic pottery Penguins are just adorable and quite rare. This pair of Penguin bud vases was made by H.J. Wood Ltd. in Burslem, England. The bottom of each Penguin has the crown logo hallmark above curved writing of H.J. Wood Ltd. around a circle. Below are the words Burslem, England.  This mark was introduced in 1948. These are most likely from the early 1950s.  Each penguin is hollow and has 2 holes for eyes and an opening at the top, which allows them to be used as vases. They are hand painted and glazed black and white with white feet and white chests. Each Penguin stands approximately 6 ΒΌ  inches tall.

The company was first established in 1865 as Wood & Son. In 1910, it was incorporated as Wood & Sons Ltd. N 1910 and H.J. Wood Ltd (at Alexandra Pottery, Burslem) was an associated company.

These are in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. The glaze is nice and shiny with no crazing. There are no chips or cracks, although there is a small scratch (see picture with arrow).  There are a few tiny small marks, not really visible; they may be residue from stickers. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.

The birds would be a perfect addition to any collection of Penguins or vintage figural pottery. They are beautiful in their simplicity of design.
