DESCRIPTION  ~  seaside*collectibles is pleased you this softly colored image that are gently rendered in bright watercolors. These illustrations have an almost primitive style, reminiscent of early Americana art. 

It is by Margot Austin [b. 1918 - d. 1999] American. Author & Illustrator of Children's books.

This image is called: There Was An Old Woman That Lived In A Shoe

Her illustrations have a halo of soft focus - they are dreamy and child-like - a perfect style for her many children's book publications.

Salvaged from a 1944 first printing of a Platt & Munk nursery rhyme publication of Austin's illustrations. 
The accompanying typeset nursery rhyme appears with the image as well as: Copr (copyright) The P. & M. (Platt & Munk) Co., Inc. is printed below the image.

DETAILS  ~ This full color offset lithograph is printed on heavy pulp paper stock. Printing on the back. Age toning on the edges with finger smudges present. Corners bumped with veining (from page turning) and some page edge chipping. Rough sewn binding edge present. None of these points adversely effect the image which is brilliant and bright.  

The full page dimensions are 7.25 " inches x 8.50 " inches.

Austin's work is highly collectible and this wonderful 65+ year old illustration is an original print, not reproduction. 
The series of illustrations that we have brought to you of her nursery rhymes were created in the early to mid 1940s is very different from her later works and it is interesting to see her artistic progression.

Austin was born in Portland, Oregon and attended the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York City. 

Among her works was a notable series about small animals in the church of Parson Pease-Porridge, beginning with 
E. P. Dutton's 1941 publication of ''Peter Churchmouse'' and continuing with ''Gabriel Churchkitten'' (1942) which 
was made into an animated film short in 1944.   Other noted titles include ''Trumpet'' (1943), ''Poppet'' (1949) and 
''Brave John Henry'' (1955). Austin also wrote and illustrated books for Jack and Jill magazine as well as Charles 
Scribner's Sons, E.P. Dutton, Rand McNally and the Platt & Munk publishers.
