George Speck was born in Charlottesville, Va., and raised in Waynesboro, VA. He has spent a lifetime painting idyllic scenes of the Virginia countryside, many of these scenes found in private collections worldwide. Using oil paintings and woodcut prints as his primary mediums, his reflection of the Valley and other places around the world are both calming and alluring, allowing a viewer to escape to a simpler time of blue-hued mountains, lush green and yellow fields and old farmland, many of which are based on sketches of places from the Valley. George Speck earned an MA in English at the City College of New York, and in 1968 he was awarded a doctorate in Art Therapy from NYU. This unique degree-a combination of art, art education, psychology, and ancient symbolism-was the first program of its kind in the country. Dr. Speck currently resides in New York City, but his roots in central Virginia inspire much of his work.
