Excerpts of Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth," a best-selling novel about building a medieval cathedral, with photographic plates in color and black and white of these magnificent buildings. "Fitzgerald’s photographs of world-famous cathedrals are magnificent by themselves. But by combining them with excerpts from Follett’s novel, Fitzgerald has captured the challenge and heartache and ultimate glory of Tom and Jack’s quest to build Kingsbridge Cathedral amid the hardships of life in twelfth-century . These photographs of soaring arches and haunting sculptures pay tribute to the artistry of the stonemason, as does the intriguing Introduction by Simon Verity, master sculptor of New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine."
Ken Follett's "The Pillars of the Earth" is perhaps his most popular and enduring novel. In Pillars of the Almighty, the talents of photographer f-stop Fitzgerald bring the central image of Follett's masterpiece - the building of a Gothic cathedral - excitingly to life. Fitzgerald's magnificent photographs are combined with excerpts from Follett's novel.
The First Step, August 28, 2007 by Jake ()
Ken Follett’s work, "Pillars of the Earth" is an epic tale which I have read through at least a dozen times. Through each read characters came to life in a new way, emphasizing Follett’s portrayal of the cyclical path we all follow and the paths that have never been trodden.
From my first read through "Pillars of the Almighty" I was immediately aware of new dimensions of Follett’s epic that I had never thought to contemplate. The beauty captured by Fitzgerald's camera will give any fan of Follett a new perspective on a tale they know well. For those who have not yet read "Pillars of the Earth", this book is the introduction and guide into Tom and Jack's world of 12th century that any fan of history, architecture or art is sure to treasure.
