In the late part of 18th century, dressing cases were made specifically to accompany upper class gentleman during travel. As at that time, travelling was only undertaken by the elite gentlemen. By the early Victorian era, ladies also began to travel and suddenly their requirements for dressing cases emerged and the new term ‘vanity box’ was used to give it a feminine flare.
