For your consideration, here is a Vintage Metal Reeleash Pet Leash, made by the M. R. Grandon Company of Los Angeles, California.  It has an old city postal code on it.  That dates it to from 1943 to around 1963.  It has some wear and scratches on it.  I have extended out a bit.  It holds and retracts okay.  It measures 4 3/8 inches long and 1/2 of an inch thick.  It will be mailed in a box for protection.  Item pictured is the actual item up for sale and comes from a non-smoking household.  (568.17s-.8bx1)
