Measures 5-11/16" X 8-1/16", 248+ pp, b&w illustrations by Henry E. Vallely, written by Gregory Duncan, hardcover with dust jacket published by Whitman Publishing Co. (WI), Whitman catalog #2306.

This is the rather hard-to-find volume 8 in the Whitman "FIGHTERS FOR FREEDOM" series, published during World War II by Whitman Publishing Co. of Racine, Wisconsin, a patriotic series of teen adventure novels featuring men and women soldiers and sailors helping to defeat the Axis powers.  This is an early printing of this title, as the listings on the back of the dust jacket list NO titles from 1945, nor do the listings at the end of the book itself.  In addition, the 1944 title KITTY CARTER, CANTEEN GIRL is erroneously listed in the back pages listings as KITTY CARTER OF THE CANTEEN CORPS (I am not aware if this error was corrected in later printings).

This little gem from World War II is equally rare, in being one of the few children's books in which the protagonists are stationed on a U. S. Navy submarine.
