Elagabalus? name is not quite as notorious as that of Nero Caligula, or even Commodus. Like the three emperors mentioned above, Elagabalushas consistently been ranked among the worst most depraved holdersof the Imperial honor. His reported atrocities crimes however almost entirely fall under the categories of upsetting the gender, cultural religious norms of Roman society.
Billon Tetradrachm 27mm 13.25g. Struck c. 219 AD. Emesa or Carrhae Mint.
Obverse: A?T K M A ANTWNEINOC CEB, laureate head right, drapery on far shoulder.
Reverse: ?HMA?X E? ??ATOC TOB, Eagle standing to the right, wings spread, head left and tail left, wreath in beak, ?-E either side of head; star between legs.
Ref. Prieur 272f. VF. some roughness, attractively toned.
