Fostoria Coin Glass AMBER serving compote trinket candy NUT DISH w handle Description Fostoria Coin Glass Dish Amber Glass 5 1/4" diameter, 6 1/2" wide to handle, 2" deep Excellent condition! As with all vintage glassware, tiny bubbles, straw marks or rough spots along seams may be found upon very close inspection. The modern version of "coin glass" first appeared around 1892, when the Central Glass and Hobbs companies began using impression of real U.S. coins in their glassware. After only a short period of production, the U.S. Government ruled that practice illegal. In order to salvage their business, the companies switched to foreign coins, and the pieces were sold as "Colombian Coin Glass" or "Spanish Coin Glass." Fostoria began producing its version of Coin Glass in the 1950s. Instead of U.S. coins or foreign coins, Fostoria used its own versions of "coins" displaying patriotic Americana designs; the Liberty Bell, stars and freedom torches. The company continued to produce Coin Glass until 1982. Please click on the pictures to see them enlarged. Fostoria originally began producing high quality glass in the late 1800s and operated in Moundsville, West Virginia for many years. In the 1980s, Fostoria was purchased by Lancaster Colony Glass Co. and operated in Ohio for several years. It is no longer made and becomes harder to find and is more valuable every day!
