More details about this item

Very small amount of wear on edges, more from storage than usage. Interior is in good shape, no tears. The collection consists of 70 compositions by 42 composers of 9 nationalities and is concentrated on the Romantic Period although you'll find two significant outliers - Handel and Mozart. The compositions are contained on 12 records stored in individually labeled sleeves and stored in a box that is slides out of a covering box. The recordings are made by 4 orchestras: New Symphony Orchestra - Alexander Gibson and Sir Adrian Boult, Conductors Vienna State Opera Orchestra, Victor Desarzens and Josef Leo Gruber, Conductors Orchestra Filarmonica di Roma, Massimo Freccia, Conductor Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts Symphonique de Paris, Rene Lebowitz, Conductor The collection is accompanied by a guide to the composers and their music. This guide consists of shortened versions of articles from Reader's Digest and other sources such as magazines and books. You can judge a classical recording based upon 3 criteria: 1) engineering, 2) conducting, and 3) orchestra performance. Many listening setups lies between the low end and the upper end of the listening quality spectrum. Engineering These recordings were made in the 1950s by RCA Custom Records Staff for Reader's Digest using Cyclophonic Miracle Sound (perhaps a coined word for marketing purposes to try to set them apart from RCA trademarked terms such as Living Sound). The recordings being analogue are very musical and lack the airiness associated with digital recordings. Detail, the ability to capture the delicate elements of the original presentation, is excellent and some of the best heard on vinyl. There is some muffling on a very few presentations, but this is rare. Overall, these records are truly some of the best heard on vinyl. Conducting Conducting seems to be a very personal choice. Perhaps a few interpretations of the compositions may not to your liking. Others like the Swan Lake Suite can absolutely bring out emotions - a hallmark of Romantic Period music. With Sir Adrian Boult on the podium you know the conducting will be superb. However individual interpretation of a work by a conductor can make it sound special (such as Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra), and for the most part it seemed that these conductors played it safe. On occasion there is embellishment and enhancement of certain passages, Orchestra The Vienna State Opera Orchestra is well established with a long history. The others seem to have disappeared although new orchestras using their names have emerged. There is nothing objectionable about the performances heard (6-7 records), and the performances are quite impressive. So far the New London Symphony Orchestra seems to have the upper hand. All four orchestras are quite competent, and I believe you will be very pleased. Conclusion This is a marvelous collection to start your children into the world of classical music. If you have a competent listening system I suspect you'll enjoy the presentations over and over. The feeling of spaciousness combined with imaging and soundstage are seductive. The recordings sound great on good to excellent quality headphones, and in some cases even better than with speakers thanks to the great level of detail. Enjoy
