More details about this item

My Lady Nicotine by J. M. Barrie (1905) H.M.Caldwell, Boston. Hardcover, 265 pages. Author Sir James Matthew Barrie is most noted and remembered for for creating Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn Davies boys. Few know that on the opposite end of the spectrum, Barrie also had a romance with 'smoking tobacco', a pastime definitely NOT for children! 'Peter Pan' had its first public performance in 1904. This edition of the book was published not long after that in 1905. (Although undated, research has shown that 1905 is the most accepted date from this publisher, which apparently only published the book once.) The book was first published in 1890 by Hodder Stoughton, London; a time when Barrie wasn't even a blip on the literary scene. In fact, the critcs panned his work. With the success of Peter Pan, publishers were quick to capitalize on Barrie's name, and madly printed anything of his they could get their hands on. H. M. Caldwell was the first American publisher to get their hands on the book after Barrie's success, but certainly not the last. "My Lady Nicotine" was re-published a number of times, and I believe it even came out in paperback a couple of years ago. But- there's no copy like an old copy, especially a scarce one like the Caldwell edition. This book would be going for a LOT more than 15.00 if it weren't for a few defects- I believe the color frontispiece is missing. (Research has shown me that it was supposed to have one and this copy doesn't.) Also, some errant child scribbled over some pages with a pencil, something I did not know when I purchased to book. I have been able to erase most of it, but there are still tell-tale signs. Still, the copy is in pretty good condition, although you will find some light smudging and cover wear. This edition also has a couple of illustrations by Maurice B. Prendergast, as shown. A nice collectible at a more than reasonable price! 4" x 6 1/2" x 3/4"
