)EARTH SCIENCE:DESERT;FOREST;VOLCANOES/EARTHQUAKES;SWAMP; WEATHER-HURRICANE;NATURE DETECTIVE: 1. NATURE DETECTIVE-Eileen M. Docekal (1989) NATURE STUDY Author: Eileen M. Docekal Category: Outdoor, Nature Publisher: Sterling Pub Co Inc NATURE STUDY ISBN-10: 0806968443 Format: Hardcover Condition Good Publication Year: 1989 ? Nature Detective: How to Solve Outdoor Mysteries by Eileen M. Docekal (Author), David Eames (Illustrator) · List Price: 16.95 · level: Ages 4-8 · Hardcover: 128 pages · Publisher: Sterling Pub Co Inc (October 1989) · Language: English · ISBN-10: 0806968443 · ISBN-13: 978-0806968445 · Product Dimensions: 10.2 x 8.2 x 0.8 inches · Shipping Weight: 1.10 pounds From School Library Journal Grade 4-6-- Through an irresistible theme of clues and mystery, Docekal opens up the natural world right outside the door. She includes information on animal tracks, animal houses, pond creatures, bird songs, animal scents, seeds, fungi, weather, and nocturnal creatures. Each chapter contains helpful drawings without captions; the information about them is presented as part of the text, which may slow readers up from time to time. At the close of each subject presentation, Docekal offers "cases" that children should be able to solve if they've absorbed what they have read. For those without the talent of Nancy Drew, answers and explanations are given at the bottom of the page. The helpful index makes it easy to go back and try to solve the cases. There are other books that cover the same material in more depth, such as Jim Arnosky's Crinkleroot's Book of Animal Tracking ( Lothrop, 1989), and books that help adults lead children to nature, such as Adrienne Katz' Nature watch (Addison-Wesley, 1986), but this could replace any old outdoor/nature activity book written especially for children. Libraries supporting strong science curriculums, adding outdoor nature facilities, or wanting to please young nature lovers will be charmed by this book, and children will relish learning the unusual tidbits included.
