Item description

ANALYTICAL CLASS-BOOK OF BOTANY: Designed for Academics and Private Students. In Two Parts. Part 1. Elements of Vegetable Structure and Physiology by Frances H. Green. Part 2. Systematic Botany: Illustrated By a Compendious Flora of the Northern States by Joseph W. Congden. 1855 First Edition, D. Appleton and Company, New York. Flexible hardcover, 228 pages. An important early academic botanical instructional textbook, possibly one of the more sought-after ones from the nineteenth century. A wealth of woodcut engravings augment the text, AND the value of this scarce book. As was the custom at the time, bookbinding was often left up to the individual to select their own binding (at a cost , of course!), and I suspect that is the case with this one. Quality bindings such as leather were the most expensive. Paperback were the cheapest, but very uncommon for academic textbooks in the 19th century. About the cheapest at this time would be cloth-cover cardboard, which this one is. Although this copy is holding together, I'd recommend a rebind for preservation's sake, and it is not all that expensive to have done. This is a scarce book that is bound to increase in value over time, an investment well worth protecting. At this price the book is still a bargain. BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: First Edition. 8vo - over 7Â" - 9Â" tall. Tan cloth-covered cardboard with designs in blind, title in gilt, also on spine. Cloth frayed and worn at spine ends and corners. Some stain spots. Front hinge a little loose but holding. First blank endpapers before title page mostly loose, but otherwise textblock solid. Occasional spot of light foxing, but interior generally Very Good, especially for age (153 years!). One page of handwritten notes in pencil on one of the last blank endpapers. 8" x 9 3/4" x 3/4"
