George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans)- "Daniel Deronda" First American publishing, prior to 2 -vol 1876 Hardcover by Harper Bros. ! (Nine parts) Found in Harper's Monthly Magazines, February - October 1876 FEATURES: Original 9-part softcover wraps of "Daniel Deronda" as featured in Harper's Monthly Magazine, February - October, 1876, complete! DESCRIPTION: Book Description: Harper's Monthly Magazine, 1876. Original soft cover wraps. Magazine Condition: see detailed condition below. No Jacket (as issued). First Edition. Measures exactly 10-1/4" x 6-1/2" wide. Daniel Deronda was sold to William Blackwood and Sons, publishers in 1876. The book was published in 8 parts starting in February, 1876 and ending in September 1876. At the same time, starting in February, 1876, the book was published by Harper's Monthly Magazine in the United States starting in February, 1876 issue and ending in the October 1876 issue. These nine individual magazines are the original copies of the first editions of the Harper's Monthly Magazines which contain all nine books of Danial Deronda. It is rare to find an entire set of four or six consecutive issues, let alone NINE ISSUES! These are in excellent condition considering their fragility and age. The titles on the spine are mostly intact, but show some chipping. The magazine issues themselves are straight, true and very sound. Text is unmarked. Of course the books contain a number of other contributions by 1876 authors, many original and once only works. These include works by John Esten Cooke, a cousin of General J.E.B. Stuart's wife, Flora Cooke Stuart; Alfred H. Guernsey who was author of Harper's pictorial history of the Civil War; Constance F. Woolson a well known author of the time (author of The Happy Valley); Harriet Prescott Spofford, author of over 30 books and 275 short stories; Lizzie W. Champney; and others. Each volume contains a table of contents for the entire magazine. A fascinating look into the literature of the post civil war era. CONDITION: The paper bindings in acceptible conditon. Thread bindings tight and complete. Cover shows some aging due to original paper wraps. Text tight and clean throughout with no markings. Spines mostly fully intact and readable - pages rough cut. No interior writing of any kind. See individual volume descriptions below: February: Both covers present; spine readable. Previous owner's name in pencil on cover. March: Back cover present, front cover missing. Spine somewhat readable. First four pages creased and corrected. April: Both covers present, front cover detached. Spine has 60% of title missing. PRESENTATION: A custom clamshell box would be a wise investment to not only protect your set, but also give it beatuiful shelf presence. A custom clamshell box would be available for this set - I have contacted a few different archival clamshell box craftsmen, and may pass this information on at your request (with purchase). A custom clamshell box is not included in the price of the set. SHIPPING: As this is a set of paper bound magazines at least 130 years old, I take great care in packing and shipping your purchase. Your magazines will be individually wrapped in a resealable crystal-clear acid-free and lignin-free bag (and bubble wrap), then shipped in a rigid, tightly-packed corrugated box with ample packing peanuts. The magazines will be protected against bending or corner dropping. Although the greatest care will be placed in the packing of the box, I have no control of the package once it leaves my shop; I would encourage the purchaser to invest in insurance, which may be purchased at cost, starting at 1.35 - very inexpensive for such a purchase as this. International shipping: I require either purchase of insurance (starts at 1.35) or certificate of mailing (0.95).
