Item description

Arthur Rackham Arthur Rackham AESOP'S FABLES Litho Book Plate VENUS AND THE CAT - Aseop's Fables Early 1900s seaside*collectibles pleased to bring you some of the most sought-after of Rackham's works. This early 1900s tipped-in, full color book art plate comes from one of the most beautiful depictions of AESOP'S FABLES in early children's illustrations. Arthur Rackham is possibly England's most celebrated children's book artist. Born in 1867, Rackham was to become the master of book illustration of his time. In his life he produced some of the finest images of classic fable, legend and fairy tales ever to be published. "Throughout his career he had developed a very individual style that is was to influence a whole generation of children, artists and other illustrators. His haunting humor and dream-like romance adds to the enchantment and fantasy of children's literature. " This Rackham illustration is entitled: VENUS AND THE CAT DETAILS: Page dimensions 6 1/8 " x 8 5/8 " Bordered image dimensions 6 1/4 " x 4 1/2 " Full Color Lithograph. Coated medium stock weight paper. SIGNED dated 1912 by Rackham. Story title appears at bottom of page. No printing on the back of plate. Red gilt on top edge of tipped-in plate (the red bleed seen at top edge of plate in image provided). This is an original plate - NOT a reproduction or copy. PLATE CONDITION: EXCELLENT. Corners softly bumped. Rough binding edge. Slightly age toned. Otherwise, plate is pristine. ABOUT Aesop "The tales are drawn from those from Antiquity - created sometime between 620 and 560 BC by Aesop, a freedman, who had come to the court of Croesus, King of Lydia in Asia Minor. Aesop had been a slave on the island of Iadmon and had gained some fame as a narrator of tales about animals. Aesop gained favour with Croesus and was eventually retained as a representative for the Lydian Court in various Greek capitals." --SOTA [Categories: Arthur Rackham [b.19 September 1867 รขโ€œ d. 6 September 1939] Charles Lutwidge Dodgson Lewis Carroll LITERATURE Children s Ephemera, Paper, Clip Art, Mosaic, Altered Art, Scrapbook ANTIQUE Vintage 1900 1910 Fine Art Scene Framed Frame able Picture Giftware Office Home Recreation Learning Teach er Tool s Home School Retro Collectable Collecting ref: Prt_AR1912_01 ] Thanks for dropping by and please take the time to view our othersales, which include vintage prints, lithographs, heirloom collectibles, first edition books, glass porcelain, as well as many other interesting and unusual collectibles.
