Item Description

The Life and Distinguished Services of William McKinley Our Martyr President by MURAT HALSTEAD With an Introduction by Senator Chauncey M. DePew and special chapters by General C. H. Grosvenor, Colonel Albert Halstead, and the late Secretary of State, John Sherman. Together with an account of the President's death and burial, by A. J. Munson. ILLUSTRATED WITH MANY HALF-TONE VIEWS AND PORTRAITS 1901, M. A. DONOHUE COMPANY, CHICAGO Hardcover, 495 pages. There were so many versions of this book put out by so many publishers, that it really is difficult to say with any accuracy just which one was the First Edition. Assuredly, this one was likely not. Many of the versions included the word "Illustrious" in the title. A number of them were "Memorial Editions". Some offered fancy bindings, others were rather plain. This one published by Donohue has ornate gilt designs on the front cover (titles in gilt on the spine too, although mostly rubbed by now) and an oval paste-down photo of McKinley, but the printing and paper are cheap, like many of the books published by Donohue. The copyright date is 1901, but this is likely an early reprint done to cash in on McKinley's assassination. Still, the content is generous, not only detailing President McKinley's Ancestory, Life, Death and Burial, but also the Trial and Execution of the Assassin, and a Sketch of Theodore Roosevelt. (Not all editions have the Rosevelt Sketch.) The book is ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT with HALF-TONES of portraits, and what the author considered relevant historical scenes. The popular contemporary historical author, Murat Halstead had the personal acquaintance, friendship and confidence of William McKinley, so who better to write a tribute book about McKinley. Although not really RARE, the Donohue edition seems one of the more difficult versions to find. BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: No jacket. 8vo-over 7Â"-9Â" tall. Green cloth hardcover embellished with title and designs in gilt, and half-tone oval paste-down portrait of McKinley on front, title in gilt also on spine. Some general cover wear- corner tips and spine ends, paste-down chipped in spots. Gilt on spine rubbed. Front hinge a little starting but binding is good and tight. Dated (Christmas, 1902) inscription in pencil on FFEP. Interior generally Very Good. 6 3/4" x 9 1/2" x 1 3/8"
