Item description

5 Religious Bookmarks Vintage ca. 1950 Set B: These five different religious woven pieces were manufactured in the 1950s by the Banner Woven Label Co., which was located in Kingston NY. I believe their original purpose was for use as book marks or were affixed to prayer cards – the kind that religious groups give in appreciation for donations. They are frequently called bookmarks, but the top and bottom edges are pinked, rather than totally finished, so they might well have been laminated to keep then form fraying. They might also have been samples of available pieces, glued onto sample cards. They measure about 5 and inches in length and 1 and 3/8 inches wide, are made of a silk-like fabric and are pinked at the top and bottom. One is The Lord’s Prayer in deep red, accented by metallic gold. One contains the verse from John 3:15: For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. One contains the poem by Ralph Cushman entitled “ The Secret:” I met God in the morning when my day was at its best, and His presence came like sunrise, like a glory in my breast. All day long the Presence lingered, all day long He stayed with me, nd we sailed in perfect calmness o’er a troubled sea. So I think I know the secret learned from many a troubled way. You must seek Him in the morning if you want Him through the day. The fourth depicts Mary, the Mother of God, as she appeared to the 3 shepherd children, Lucy, Francisco and Jacinta, in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. Below that is the prayer which she taught them: O my Jesus, forgive us. Deliver us from the fire of hell. Draw the souls of all to Heaven, especially those in greatest need. The fifth one is a bit different in that it was given out – probably as a bookmark – by the Wellwood Funeral Home, Richard H. Johnston, and is woven with the 23rd Psalm – The Lord is my shepherd. They have been stored in my smoke-free home.
