From the Book: 1875 - The three Stacey daughters are left in Detroit with an aunt to be "finished" while their father takes charge of an Arizona army post. Arizona Army life in the days of Apache warfare, and of Ellen Stacey whose life dream it was to become a doctor. An independent soul, Ellen finds silly girlhood gaiety and boy-talk foreign to her. Joining her parents out west, she has her troubles persuading them to let her study with Dr. Tower, and to accept her growing affection for Brent, an enlisted man outside the social circle. However, she does both successfully and sets out to be Arizona's first woman doctor as Brent's wife. Unnecessary romanticizing hinders movement, but the cumulative effect is all to the good.
