NEW - EXCELLENT CONDITION - FINE ART PRINT Fine Art Reproduction on Premium Paper Unframed 1873, 19th Century Artist Title: LA GHIRLANDATA Original Victorian Era Artist was: Rossetti, Dante Gabriel (English b.1828 d.1882) Size: 24" x 18" Suitable for Framing Easy to Frame Printed on high quality archival paper that is color rated for 85 to 135 years. BIOGRAPHY: The original painting of "La Ghirlandata" hangs in the City of London Museums/Guildhall Art Gallery. It was bequeathed to the gallery in 1902, by Charles Gassiot. La Ghirlandata is one of artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti's more decorative paintings. It depicts a beautiful red-haired woman - modeled by Alexa Wilding - frozen in the act of playing an ornate harp. Her hands are poised in a gesture that captures their artful grace. Two angelic girls (it is interesting to note that May Morris - the daughter of William and Jane Morris - was the model for both faces) border the woman. The garland of flowers that appears in the upper left side of the work inspired the title of the painting. Composed of glorious roses and honeysuckle blossoms, this garland is more than a pretty bouquet. Indeed, there is some suggestion that these roses and honeysuckles may allude to desire and passion, as they did in Venus Verticordia, another of Rossetti's paintings. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in London, son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was professor of Italian at King's College, London. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became an eminent art critic, and he had two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina. After studying at Sass's drawing academy for four years, in 1846 Rossetti was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. However, impatience with the restrictive methods and slow pace of the Academy regime led him to abandon his studies there. He then worked under Ford Madox Brown. In 1848 he met Holman Hunt, and they shared a studio together for a time. Through Hunt, Rossetti became acquainted with Millais, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born in that year. Rossetti's paintings are distinguished by his eye for beauty, choice of subjects and intensity of vision. He painted many pictures on the theme of Dante and Beatrice, and chose other subjects from Italian history and Arthurian tales. We Ship Internationally also.
