Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this lovely, antique postcard view of the First Baptist Church in Worcester, MA, published by the Hugh C. Leighton Co. of Portland, ME. The Hugh C. Leighton Co. was in business from 1906 until 1909. They were a printer and major publisher of national view-cards, especially scenes of New England. They printed most of their cards in four distinct styles usually employing tinted halftones. Most of their cards had a subdued but recognizable pallet. While some cards were printed at their plant in the U.S. most were manufactured in Frankfort, Germany. Almost all their cards were numbered. They merged with Valentine Sons in 1909. This particular First Baptist Church once stood at the corner of Main and Ionic Avenue in Worcester but was destroyed by a fire in 1937 and no church was ever built at this site afterward. This particular church building was finished in 1905 and occupied until its destruction in 1937. At the time it was considered to be one of the most lovely buildings on Main St. in Worcester. The congregation still exists but relocated to a new church building at the corner of Park Ave and Salisbury St. in Worcester, very near to Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The front of this card features a very detailed view of the old Church with its stately bell tower and wonderful stone masonry. At the upper left is the caption, "Worcester, Mass., First Baptist Church.". The back is an early divided back postcard with most of the back reserved for the address and 1/3 reserved for a brief message. along the left margin can be found the publisher's info along with the Leighton ware number, L327. The Leighton logo is located at the top of the Division line. This card is in Fair condition with significant crazing of the surface finish and the left corner having fold creasing. This card will be a nice addition to your collection of views of Worcester, antique views of churches of Massachusetts and New England. and Hugh C. Leighton products.
