Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this Full Bleed, color view postcard of the Memorial Church of Holy Cross in Reading, PA, published by The Valentine Sons Publishing Co. Ltd. of New York and Printed in Great Britain. The New York office of Valentine Sons Co was in business from 1907 until 1909. This was the New York branch for Valentineโ€™s of Dundee, Scotland. Another office later opened in Boston, Massachusetts. They published view-cards depicting scenes throughout the Country. While many of these cards were printed in the United States in their later years, they have the exact same distinct look of the tinted halftones which were printed in Great Britain. All of their cards are numbered and have a three digit prefix and a three digit suffix. In 1909 they merged with the Hugh C. Leighton Company of Portland, Maine to become Leighton and Valentine. The Memorial Church of the Holy Cross was completed in 1893 after its beginning in 1890. It was the last building by a church congregation which has existed since 1822 and is one of the oldest church congregations in Reading and certainly the oldest United Methodist church in the area. When it was founded it was known as the Ebenezer Church with the consolidation with two other smaller churches. The front of this card features a front angled view of the church tower, standing above the surrounding neighborhood with its stately stone architecture, red roofed cupola and stained glass arch windows. The front of the church itself features an arch window with a stained glass rosette within the arch over a set of three arch doorways leading down steps to the street level. The bottom right contains the Valentine unique ware number system of 3 numbers followed by three numbers, in this case, 203,114 and then the photographer's initials, JV within a circle behind the ware number. The back of this card is a divided back postcard with the publisher's info on two lines in the left margin. the left side is devoted to the correspondence. The top of the division features the Valentine Sons Logo and the bottom left corner features the registered Union Trademark, UNCO. This card is in near mint condition with only slight yellowing from age. It has been postmarked Reading PA 1912. One corner has slight flaking of the front yet it is still a sharp corner as are the remaining three. This card will be the perfect addition to your collection of Churches of Pennsylvania, Buildings in Reading, PA, Valentine Sons of New York or Valentine Sons cards from its various offices and locations.
