Item description

Arch of Triumph is set in Paris during the late 1930's. Europe was on the road to recovering from the first World War and lurking was the air of the 2nd. Germans opossed to the new political views that ruled Germany fled anywhere refuge could be found. Ravic, once an accomplished surgeon in Germany, found himself in Paris, with no visa or passport. As an illegal refugee he had no rights to practice his profession in France and was forced to work underground performing surgeries illegally. Paris, synonomous with elegance, good food, brothels, and love, is described so beautifully in the eyes of Ravic. Love, friendship, danger, philosophy all have their places in this book. Remarque's book is a thinly veiled portrait of Marlene Dietrich; or rather the intertwining of her life with his in Paris at the eve of war in Europe, the year before the WW2 broke out. This is the hardcover only stated Appleton Edition from 1945. Other than clipped cardholder flyleaves (ex lib), both the mylar-covered DJ and the book are in good condition. There are no rips, tears, etc. and the pages and binding are tight. This wonderful, impossible-to-find item is available for purchase now! **Note: All books listed as FIRST EDITIONS are stated by the publisher in words or number lines--or--only stated editions that include only the publisher and publication date.
