Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this wonderful view of a shopping block in downtown Meriden, CT, printed by Curt Teich for the August Schmelzer Co. of Meriden, CT. Curt Teich of Chicago was the largest publisher of Postcards from 1893 until they were sold to Regensteiner Publishers in 1974 which continued to print cards at the Chicago plant until 1978. They published cards not only for themselves but also made cards for many other postcard publishers, as was this case for August Schmelzer Co. of Meriden, CT. This card was made by Curt Teich using a half-tone coloring process and is a white bordered card. However, it is not one of CT's Linen cards and, according to the ware number, it was made in the early 1920's before Curt Teich adopted its widely known numbering system which makes it so easy to determine which year a card was printed. The front of this card features a white border view of the four story building of shops and stores with people on both streets of the corner. The bottom left bears the caption, "Derecktor's Block No. 2, Formerly Meriden House, Meriden, Conn." The back is a divided back card with C.T. American Art as the division and the Curt Teich logo at the bottom of the division, at the top of the division to the right is the ware number "R-82632". The publisher's info is along the left margin. This card is in excellent condition with a tiny bit of peeling at the bottom left corner and no other damage or extraneous marks any where on the card. This card will look nice among your collection of Curt Teich postcards printed for other publishers, views of Connecticut, views of Meriden, CT. and Views of New England.
