The pages are lightly tanned, the previous owner's name is written on the front end paper. The cover shows a small amount of edge wear and there are white marks on the back. Good. Hardcover. Chapter 1: Bells of Pei-t'ang. What are they saying? But the night breeze was fitful, and to the listening girl in the quiet corner of the conservatory, hidden by a hydrangea in a huge pot, the brazen voices grew for the moment faint and dying. In the silence the opening bars of what was then the latest fox trot in Peking came shrilly from the squeaky instruments of a small orchestra somewhere inside the house; and the girl turned her head once more, looking through the half open door into the big lounge, watching with something of a strained look in her soft eyes the rapidly increasing number of guests passing and repassing the opening in the long Japanese reed curtains.
