Item description

THE COVER IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION-just has a surface mark that is only seen holding it at the right angle in the reflected light. COME TO MY PARTY by Judith Benet Richardson; Salley Mavor,ILLUSTRATOR Reading level: Baby-Preschool Hardcover Publisher: MACMILLAN Publishing; 1st ed edition (March 31, 1993) Language: English ISBN: 0027761479 Product Dimensions: 0.2 x 8.2 x 10.2 inches Shipping Weight: 13.6 ounces. From Publishers Weekly Introduced in Richardson's The Way Home , Savi the elephant here attends a birthday celebration in the jungle with his bird friend, Harold. When the two are awakened from a nap by a leopard's roar, the diminutive Harold is a bit nonplussed. Savi tells him not to worry, since "That's how leopards talk." Harold spies three leopards having a party, and Savi speculates that perhaps their roar was in fact an invitation; the pals join in, bringing a floral crown as a gift. As Harold perches on Savi's trunk, wearing a party hat just like the others, his fear disappears while he helps devour the birthday cake--and stays to pick up every last crumb from the jungle floor. Richardson's meager narrative is given needed distinction by Mavor's uncommonly detailed fabric relief art. Surrounded by richly textured borders reflecting indigenous hues, her illustrations have an exceptional three-dimensional quality, making the jungle flora and fauna seem to pop right off the page. Ages 3-6. From School Library Journal PreSchool-- In The Way Home (Macmillan, 1991), Savi, a young elephant, is at the beach with her mother; here she is in the jungle with her friend Harold, a bird. Like the earlier story, this one has a simple text that deals with preschoolers' concerns, and displays glowing fabric relief illustrations that convey the atmosphere of the habitat marvelously. Savi and Harold are napping when Rana the leopard wakes them with her roar and then disappears. The two friends peek through the vines and see a birthday party in progress. " 'Maybe ROAR means come to my party,' " says Savi. " 'Maybe ROAR means I'll eat you up,' " counters Harold timidly. Despite the bird's fears, they make a present for Rana and join the festivities. This book will definitely appeal to young patrons. Birthdays and fear of the unknown are themes with which they can easily identify. The colorful collages are cleverly conceived and executed and will fascinate preschoolers with their detail and underlying humor. A fine choice for library shelves. Card catalog description Despite their fear of his roar and sharp teeth, jungle animals Savi and Harold go to Rana the leopard's birthday party.
