Item description

Cotton is King and Pro-Slavery Arguments: Comprising the Writings of Hammond, Harper, Christy, Stringfellow, Hodge, Bledsoe, and Cartwright. Published by Pritchard Abbott Loomis, Augusta GA, 1860. 908 pages. Frontspiece engraving of E.N. Elliott LL.D. The book is externally in Fine condition, internally in Very Good condition, with some foxing on a few pages (mainly chapter title pages). Beautifully rebound in calfskin with four raised bands on the spine. The original title and authors' names in gilt lettering have been preserved from the original spine. Plain end-papers. This is a compilation of pro-slavery writings by leading Southern intellectuals written in the years leading up to the Civil War. The authors do more than defend slavery: They present it as a positive good! Each chapter argues from a particular perspective: political economy (Christy), moral and political philosophy (Bledsoe), the Bible (Stringfellow), social ethics (Harper), ethnology (Cartwright), and international law (Elliott).
