Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this lovely view on a linen postcard of a secluded forest trail in Cook Forest State Park, in the Allegheny region of Pennsylvania. This card was made by Curteich of Chicago, the largest makers of postcards in America and perhaps the world from 1893 until 1974. They made postcard for their own networks of distributors as well as for many other postcard publishers and distributors. This is such a card as it was made for E. Madciff of Hershey, PA in 1937, as a part of the over all series known as the "A Pennsylvania Beauty View" series of postcards. This one was #58 of that series. Cook Forest is a 8,500-acre Pennsylvania state park in Farmington Township, Clarion County, Barnett Township, Forest County and Barnett Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is a heavily wooded area of rolling hills and mountains along the Clarion River in northwestern Pennsylvania. Cook Forest State Park is known for some of America's finest virgin white pine and hemlock timber stands and was once called the "Black Forest" due to the preponderance of evergreen tree coverage. Cook Forest is now a National Natural Landmark and was rated one of America's top 50 state parks by National Geographic Traveler magazine. It was chosen by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and its Bureau of Parks as one of "Twenty Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks". The front of this card features a fantastic view looking down a shaded forest trail with the old growth forest on either side and over arching the trail, leaving it deep in shadow with bits of sunlight hitting the forest floor. the bottom center bears the inscription, "58 Enchanting Solitude" and the top left bears the series name, "A Pennsylvania Beauty View". The back is a divided back postcard with the Curteich info as the division. The E. Madciff info is along the left margin. There is a brief description of the view on the front located in the upper left side. the stamp box contains the Curteich Ware number, "7A-H418" which is how we are able to determine that this card was printed in 1937, even though it was postmarked 1954. This card is in excellent condition with clean crisp and sharp corners. There is a bit of writing on the back which lowers its condition slightly but otherwise this card is in pristine condition. This card will look great among your collection of views of Pennsylvania's State parks, wild scenes in PA, and postcards made by Curteich for other distributors.
