Item description

We are happy to be able to offer for your consideration this lovely view of the Chapel and Greylock Rest at Adams, MA printed by Curteich of Chicago for C.W. Hughes Inc. of Mechanicville, NY. Curt Teich, better known as Curteich, of Chicago was the largest maker of postcards in America if not, the World. They made hundreds of thousands of cards for their own distribution plus for many other publishers of postcards, as well. This is just such a case. This card was made for the C.W. Hughes Inc of Mechanicville, NY. The C. W. Hughes Co Inc, was in business from 1915 until 1944 and they were a publisher of view-cards depicting scenes of upstate New York, Vermont, and western Massachusetts. In 1923 they purchased the negatives of J.S. Wooley and began producing printed postcards from them. They also had a number of their cards printed by other concerns, in this particular case, Curteich of Chicago, IL. The Greylock Rest was one of the many convalescent homes for tubercular patients during the early 1900's and late 1800's. Such facilities were located all over the nation, mostly in areas abundant with Natural beauty and lots of clear, fresh air and sunshine. It was believed that it would be beneficial for tuberculosis patients and would lead to an eventual cure. The front of this card features a view of the chapel and the main house of the facility, looking down a tree lined lane. there is abundant greenery, lawn and places for the patients and visitors to seat and picnic or stroll among the extensive grounds. At the top center-right is the Caption, "Chapel and Greylock Rest, Adams, Mass. -- 64" with the "64" being the series number. the bottom right corner bears the C_T ware number, "1A1479-N" which identifies this card as being printed in 1931. The back of the card is a divided back card with the printer's info as the division and the publisher's info along the left margin. Additionally, the publisher's Logo is at the bottom left corner. This card was postmarked Jun 10,1949, meaning that this card sat unsold for about 18 years before being mailed off. This card is in Excellent condition with the upper left corner having some exfoliation and the lower left corner as well. This card will be the perfect addition to your collection of tuberculosis facilities of America, views of New England, Views of Massachusetts and postcards made by Curteich for other publishers.
