Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this view of a typical vessel belonging to the Merchants Miners Line, which made both freight and passenger/freight routes all up and down the Atlantic sea board during the early part of the 20th Century and last half of the 19th Century as well. This was published and printed for the line by Curt Teich, better known as Curteich, in its later years. Curt Teich Co. Inc. of Chicago was the largest producer of Postcards in the U.S. and were in business from 1893 until 1974 when they were bought out by Regensteiner which operated the plant until 1978. They are known for their vivid colors on linen stock within a simple white border with block type print within that border. The Merchants Miners Line was more accurately known as the Merchants and Miners Transportation Co. and they were in business for exactly 100 years, from 1852 until 1952. They ran a number of routes all up and down the East Coast ferrying both passengers and cargo to the seaside cities and ports. The front of this card features one of the ships that was a typical M M Line vessel of the 1930's period with black hull, white superstructure, red ring around the black smokestack. The upper right of the card bears the caption, "Merchants Miners Line" and the bottom right bears the Curteich Ware number, 5A-H1024. The back is a divided back card with the publisher's info as the division. At the top left in the message area, there is a brief run down on the various shipping routes. This card was postmarked 1939, yet from the Ware number we know that the card was made in 1935. This card is in near perfect condition with the slightest rounding on the two right corners.
