Item description

TARZAN OF THE APES Edgar Rice Burroughs A. L. Burt, 1915.(1914) The book is over 100 years old. The earliest reprint of this classic book. A.L. Burt Company reprinted this Tarzan of The Apes book from 1915 until 1927. Many were printed in the 1920's. This one was printed a year after the first edition by McClurg, in 1915. My copy comes with a signed check by Edgar Rice Burroughs made out to Canyon Cleaners as he was a good dresser. The check is from later life and desirable. I obtained this check from Danton Burroughs, his grandson. If you cannot afford the first edition by McClurg in a dust jacket, this is the one you should get for your collection. The jacket is not married and originally came with the book. The book and jacket have been in my collection for 35 years. No refunds on this if sent outside the USA and there is no way to insure the book once it leaves the USA. Consider please before a purchase. A 1915 copy. After 1915 the Burt Company did not use this white, chalky colour for the lettering on the emerald green cloth, but rather used a more solid, yellowy and more permanent colour. You can still find these copies with the lettering pretty much intact. They are also duller looking than the chalky white one shown here for sale. The earliest copy of the book in embossed emerald green cloth with the cream white lettering and the dust jacket with Tarzan shown dark green silhouette, orange and light green design after Fred Arting, whose same dust jacket design as on the first 1914 A. C. McClurg book of "Tarzan of The Apes." A. L. Burt Company published this book from 1915 to 1927. This book follows the same stamping design on the cover with the embossment and same dust jacket design of the 1914 McClurg first edition, which is very expensive in it original dust jacket. One will see various editions of the Burt reprint over these years, most printed in black ink on some color of green cloth. Only the white or cream printed versions on embossed emerald green cloth, in my opinion, command a higher price. This Burt Co. printing design follows that design issued by the A.C. Mc Clurg Company. The book is bound in slick emerald green cloth, with the same embossing on the front board as in the first 1914 book edition, with the same number of pages and same pagination, printed from the same plates. The fragile flake white lettering is present on the front board, some flaking on the spine letter as shown. Else the book is fine. The dust jacket is very good with a bit of rubbing on the front panel (see photo #3) a little bit of wear as shown, a few closed tears also are shown, some chipping. Overall much better than encountered for an old book such as this one. No tape or other "improvement" factors marring this jacket. It is rare to find this particular flake white chalk printing edition and it's just not encountered in nice condition in embossed emerald green. Jacket will be enclosed in a Mylar jacket protector, and the book will be sent insured with tracking.
