Item description

GEORGE CRUMB - NIGHT OF THE FOUR MOONS/ VOICE OF THE WHALE (VOX BALAENAE) 1974 STEREO LP, CBS MASTERWORKS M 32739 There is no doubt that George Crumb is one of the most unique, innovative classical avant garde composers of our time. His introduction of costuming and other theatrical elements into live performance is legendary. If you've ever been lucky enough to a Crumb program performed live, you'll never forget it. You won't get the visuals here, but you will be in for a scintillating musical experience. Night Of The Four Moons for soprano and four instrumentalists is a four-song cycle to texts by Federico Garcia Lorca scored in 1969 during the Apollo 11 flight. It is an "occasional work" that is very difficult to find recordings of now. The Vox Balaenae or Voice of the Whale stands as one of the 20th centuryโ€™s most performed avante garde works. It is a suite based on songs of the humpback whale: the musicians are instructed in the score to perform in a "serene, pure, transfigured" manner. It is quite theatrical too as it calls for the musicians to wear masks and to perform under a blue light. Both pieces were performed by the Aeolian Chamber Players and Night Of The Four Moons features Jan DeGaetani, Mezzo-Soprano. This recording is out of print, difficult to find and to my knowledge, not available on CD. LP cover is VG with a little edge wear and some visible ring wear. Vinyl only looks VG with some surface marks (mostly paper scuffs), but I've played the LP and it sounds Near-Excellent. If you know George Crumb's work, you know that there are many quiet passages where a noisy, scratchy LP can often detract. This copy is still quite listenable, and plays remarkably better than it looks.
