Secret as a bud and slippery as water, the ethos of the gypsy is a curious blend of elements pagan and Christian, primitive and shrewd, bucolic and bestial. Until recently his history is almost unchronicled except in the laws of repression and expulsion. Most of what we now know about him we owe to the Gypsy Lore Society, of which the American poet and scholar Charles Godfrey Leland was founder and first president. Leland was living in Victorian London, a wealthy and sucessful author when he became interested in gypsies. Thereafter he sought out gypsies, not only in England, but throughout Europe, the near East, and in America, eventually declaring that "I have enjoyed gypsying more than any sport in the world." On the winding road that follows the Thames, or proffering tobacco to wine-warmed roms in smoky tent amid a scrabble of children and bright eyed women, Leland collected traditions, magics, and hitherto unpublished vocabulary lists. He became in time a confident, letter writer, toter of stolen goods, adviser, and news-monger, from one gypsy camp to another. This is the first American edition of this book. It was last published in England in 1891. Shipping Handling Via Media Mail Is 4.00 Shipping Handling Via Priority Mail Is 17.00
