Item description

Here for your delectation is the SPECTACULAR RARE---------------HEART OF DARKNESS and THE SECRET SHARER by Joseph Conrad, with an Introduction by Albert J. Guerard. In HEART OF DARKNESS, Marlow, the narrator, undertakes both an outer and an inner journey. The outer journey takes him into the heart of Africa, where he encounters representatives of every colonial stripe. Conrad's prose is dense and complex. Marlow's inner journey--during which he confronts the mysterious Mr. Kurtz--fully captures the emotional charge of the moment. 'Heart of Darkness', the tale of a European seaman journeying up an African river, is a Chinese box of Chinese whispers. What perhaps strikes the reader first is the unbridgeable conflict between the work's apparent aim - the exposure of the barbaric reality behind the enlightenment propaganda of Imperialist bureaucracies - and its effect, a baffling nebulousness; this is matched by conflict between the prodigious exactness of Conrad's prose, and the vague thoughts, images, feelings, events it asks us to imagine. 'Heart' is usually seen as the first masterpiece of the 20th century and one of the key modernist texts. THIS IS THE BASIS FOR THE HIT MOVIE APOCALYPSE NOW!! This is the softcover undated stated Signet Edition. Other than some discreet underlining in the introduction, both the cover and the book are in excellent condition. There are no rips, tears, etc.--and the pages and binding are tight (see photo). **Note: All books listed as FIRST EDITIONS are stated by the publisher in words or number lines--or--only stated editions that include only the publisher and publication date.
