We are pleased to offer for your consideration this color postcard view from the Suffolk Museum of a diorama of the Old Cobbler Shop, published by J.J. Heatley of Smithtown, NY in 1972. The Suffolk museum is now known as The Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages And this name was adopted in 2000. It is an open air museum located in Stony Brook, New York, and was founded in 1939 as the Museums at Stony Brook. It is known for its collection of over 200 carriages and its extensive collection of work by the Hudson River School painter William Sidney Mount and over 4000 other paintings, sculptures and prints. In 2006, it became a Smithsonian affiliate. The front of this card features a view of the life sized diorama/sculpture known as Old Cobbler Shop. and we can view a mannequin of the old cobbler at work amongst the tools of his trade at his workbench among 18th and 19th century shoe making artifacts. The back features a divided back postcard with the publisher's info as the division and the publisher's ware number, "10471" at the bottom of the division. The upper left side bears a brief description of the view on the front and the address of the museum. This card is in Near Mint condition with the slightest bump on one corner and no other creases or extraneous marks on the front. The card has been posted and postmarked 12 June, 1972, however the stamp is missing, yet the stamp box is immaculate. This card will be a nice addition to your collection of postcard views of Museums, Views of Long Island, and Heatley postcards.
