HUNGRY HILLS by Daphne Du Maurier Book Description: Blakiston Company 1943., 1943. First Edition (? ) . Book in fair condition. Navy blue boards. Faded gold lettering on spine. Spine ends and corners rubbed. Minor edge wear. Pencilled ownership. Book is solid and clean. Pages are rough cut at printer. Small 8vo; 344 pages. Novel about struggle of an aristocratic family and copper mining on Hungry Hill set in 19th century Ireland. The novel deals with the eruption of class warfare as a prominent semi-aristocratic land-owner attempts to sink a copper mine in the midst of the beautiful snowcapped mountain, known as Hungry Hill, and the subsequent revolt of his Irish tenants because of it. When two brothers fall in love with the same woman, the affair means disaster both to the family as well as the family empire. Chapter One: Copper John, 1820-1828, "On the third of March, 1820, John Brodric set out from Andriff to Doonhaven, intending to cover fifteen miles of his journey before nightfall." "He looked for the last time at the stone walls of the castle, and down across the sloping grass to the creek, and Doon Island, and the grey mass of Hungry Hill. Then he smiled once more at Jinny. 'You never knew my mother, did you?' He said. 'She died many years ago in Nice. The last words she ever said to me were, "Don't look so serious, Henry boy. Thinking never did anybody any good." 'I don't know if she was right or wrong, but thinking always brought me pain. You can tell that to your son, when he comes into his legacy.'" Follows in the author's tradition of dynastic novels such as "Jamaica Inn" and "Frenchman's Creek" Hard Cover. Very Good. Binding is Hard Cover. Previous owner's name on FFEP. Book Condition: GOOD.
