Item description

THE JEWS IN AMERICA: A HISTORY by Rufus Learsi, copyright 1954. Published by The World Publishing Company, Cleveland and New York. Hard cover, no dust jacket. Stated First Edition. 382 pages include Bibliographical Note and Index. Book is in readable condition â“ inscription and personal library label inside front cover. It appears to have been dampened at some point â“ as you can see from the picture the boards are somewhat warped â“ pages are tight and firmly attached. The white spots are remnants of the dust jacket which evidently stuck when they became damp. Text is clear. From the Foreword: With all their distinctness and “high visibility” the Jews in America are not, of course, the compact body which the anti-Semite professes to see in them. They are instead a highly diversified group, socially and ideologically, and their character and destiny as a community are envisioned by them in a variety of ways. They have, for example, their extreme “isolationists,” who contend that the Jews in America can and should follow their own course, unaffected by the lot of their coreligionists in other lands, and, on the other hand, those who see no future for the community in America apart from those in other landsâ”from the one that constitutes the state of Israel, in particular. The present writer advocates neither of those extremes. But every story, as is well known, is tinged by the prepossessions of the storyteller, and the author’s outlook, which he has been at no pains to conceal, emerges clearly at various stages of the book. His most pervasive assumption, perhaps, is that the story of the Jews in America must embrace the historic heritage and concurrent fortunes of their people the world over, in addition, of course, to their life as an integral part of the American nation. The author is persuaded that his general outlook is shared by the great majority of his fellow Jews in America, but in no sense is this narrative a reflection of the “official” attitude of any group in the community, large or small. No such group has engaged him to write this book, and he has not sought or followed the advice of any before, during or after its composition. And if at times he has shown himself partisan, he has not, he trusts, failed to present other viewpoints fairly and fully.
