Item description

THE UNDEFEATED by Gerald W. Johnson Minton, Balch Co., First Edition, 1927 Condition: Good (with Very Good partial dj) Before Gutzon Borglum began the monumental task of supervising the sculpture of Mount Rushmore, he worked on a similar project: sculpting the visage of Robert E. Lee on Georgia's Stone Mountain. Begun in 1923, it was intended as a Memorial to the leaders of the Confederacy (Lee, Davis and Jackson). (After this book was printed, the project was discontinued, due to lack of funds and Borglum's departure to South Dakiota. Years later it was resumed and completed in 1969.) The book is a tribute to Borglum's work on Stone Mountain. The well-preserved front panel and spine of the scarce dust jacket is taped to the back pastedown. The book has cover corner and spine end wear, a gutter split at page 10, slight page edge wear, darkening on the end papers, an inscription on the ffep and an original book store label on the back free end paper.
