Item description

THIS WOULD BE A GREAT EDITION TO YOUR VINTAGE BOOK LIBRARY. KINDRED OF THE DUST-by PETER B. KYNE-Author of The Valley of the Giants and Cappy Ricks. Book Description: NYC: GROSSET DUNLAP, 1920, NYC, 1920. Hard Cover. 1920s period piece page turner by Peter B. Kyne: a lumber magnate's son falls for a girl ostracized by her hometown and known as "Nan of the Sawdust Pile." "A tale of a man's belief in the women he loves. " Love story with Hector McKaye, millionaire lumber king, Donald McKaye, who is torn between love for his father and for Nan, and Nan of sawdust Pile who has been ostracized because of minor mistakes in her life. Daney readily discovered in a pool-hall the man he sought. Dirty Dan O'Leary was a chopper in the McKaye employ, and had earned his sobriquet, not because he was less cleanly than the average lumberjack but because he was what his kind described as a dirty fighter. That is to say, when his belligerent disposition led him into battle, which it frequently did, Mr. O'Leary's instinct was to win, quickly and decisively, and without consideration of the niceties of combat, for a primitive person was Dirty Dan. Fast as a panther, he was as equally proficient in the use of all his extremities, and, if hard pressed, would use his teeth. Really good price! Book is in FAIR shape. Outside of the usual scuffs, p.o.'s name on ffep, this book is a very nice reading copy. Illustrations by Dean Cornwell. Frontispiece illustration of "Hector McKaye was bred of an acquisitive race" is incredibly well done. Hardcover lacking DJ. 5" x 7 1/2" tall. 376 pages. Green cloth with silver lettering, frontispiece and 3 black/white plates by Dean Cornwell. Hunterโ€™s green linen with light silver stamped titles. review: Tough Love Sawmill Style, February 6, 2001 Reviewer: A reader Son of Scottish tough guy sawmill baron goes off to college in the East, incidentally doubling Dad's money by investing in forestland and paying for college with the profits (thus handing Dad back all the college money upon graduation), then coming back to try to measure up to Dad. Son does it, along the way filling the redemption theme of the book by falling in love with the woman of bad repute who lives at the edge of proper sawmill society with her illegitimate child. Contains fistfights and other Northwest bygone era male behaviors, and includes vivid descriptions of father blowing off a cannon each morning to start the day (lives on a cliff, so it's cool). By the end of the book, Son is Dad's boy, and everybody better just accept the wife he has chosen. Wife experiences this act of grace and adoption with gratefulness, and turns her own brand of toughness and love into supporting Son. Good themes, basic story, blow off the cannon, take over the dynasty. Then put the book down and return to your own comparatively miserable data-entry existence, buoyed by this outdated but invigorating book. Condition: Please note if you are purchasing a used item: Although some of my inventory may be in Like New or Very Good condition, most used materials show mild to moderate wear and tear.
