Munjara was the Kingdom of the Elephants. In the training camp or the vastness of the surrounding jungle, the elephants reigned supreme. Seventeen-year-old Tumbi helped to look after Rajendra and the other trained elephants, and no matter how many hours he spent with these great creatures, his wonder never dulled. He marveled that the giants of the forest, so powerful and at times ferocious, were also wise and gentle and would obey the slightest word of man. Tumbi's dead father had been acknowledged chief among the mahouts, the men who rode the elephants, and Tumbi looked forward eagerly to the day when he would be worthy of taking his father's place. For this Indian boy's whole life was bound up with the elephants, in the forest camp where they hauled the teakwood or in the strident jungle where he sometimes helped Bapundi the tracker, who built the cunning pit traps in which the wild elephants were caught. But wherever he was, Tumbi was deeply concious of the drama and excitement and majesty of the elephants----and the whole marvelous range of nature.
