Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this black and white postcard view of a park lined street in Karlsbad, Germany by a publisher known only as L.W.K. and mailed June 20, 1929. Karlsbad is an administrative area in the district of Karlsruhe, in Baden-Wรผrttemberg, Germany. It is situated in the northern Black Forest, 13 km southeast of Karlsruhe, and 15 km west of Pforzheim and it is very close to the border with France. It was one of the most forested areas of 1920's Germany and one of the loveliest regions in Western Europe, apart from the mountainous areas. Because of the trees and fresh air of the area, it was considered to be a place of recuperation for TB patients and there were many health spas and convalescent facilities during this period. The front of this card features a black and white view of the urban area which shows a park lined street with apartment buildings lining the street. Between the buildings and the street are wide park-like avenues filled with lawns, Trees, fountains and other greenery. This is characteristic of this region of Germany and many urban environments tended to feature such park lined urban streets. This is one of the features which made Germany appear to be more suburban or rural than it actually was, during this time. The top left of the view bears the caption, "KARLSBAD. Obere Parkstrabe." Trans. "Karlsbad, Upper Parkstreet". The back is a divided back post card with L.W.K. in the center of the division line. There is a series number at the bottom of the division, "6058", and a ware number at the bottom right corner, "2778-10". The bottom left corner has the words, "Nachdruck verboten." Trans. "do not reproduce". the stamp and part of the postmark is missing however the card was dated 6/20/29. This card is in excellent condition with minor creasing at two corners and yellowing from age. This will be a nice addition to your collection of pre-depression views of Germany, Western Europe, German Street scenes and L.W.K. postcards.
