Item description

northwestbookbuyer Store An untitled engraved woodcut print of the famous Philadelphia LIBERTY BELL FEATURES: A high quality reproduction of an untitled illustration of the Liberty Bell. Paper size measures 8-1/2" x 11". Image size measures 2-1/4" x 2-3/4" tall. CONTENTS: Original image was selected by the David Sander, of the Sander Wood Engraving Published by the Roast Pigeon Press, Porter Indiana. Copyright 1975. The original image is not sourced, but any copyrights held by individual writings or images have been long expired. The original illustration may have come from Harper's Monthly Magazine, July 1851, from the story "Our National Anniversary" by Benson Lossing. An excerp from that story: "Tradition says that it was first broken by Dr. Franklin, who remarked, 'Gentlemen, we must now all hang together, or we shall surely hang separately.' Thousands of anxious citizens had gathered in the streets of Philadelphia, for it was known that the final vote would be taken on that day. From the hour when Congress convened in the morning, the old bell-man had been in the steeple. He had placed a boy at the door below, to give him notice when the announcement should be made. As hour succeeded hour, the graybeard shook his head, and said, 'They will never do it! they will never do it!' Suddenly a loud shout came up from below, and there stood the little blue-eyed boy clapping his hands, and shouting, 'Ring! Ring!' Grasping the iron tongue of the old bell, backward and forward he hurled it a hundred times, its loud voice proclaiming 'Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.' The excited multitude in the streets responded with loud acclamations, and with cannon peals, bonfires, and illuminations, the patriots held a glorious carnival that night in the quiet city of Penn." DESCRIPTION: This illustration was selected from a life-long wood engraving collection amassed by both Jacob Sander, the founder of the Sander Wood Engraving Company, and later his son, David. David spent a lifetime collecting books of all types and subjects, as his passion was wood engraving. The Roast Pigeon Press was a subsidiary of the Sander Wood Engraving Company of first Chicago, and later Porter, Indiana. The Sander Wood Engraving Company was at the forefront of the wood engraving profession at the height of its use in advertising. This image, along with other similiar images like it, were produced by the Roast Pigeon Press in the late 1970's and early 1980's as an outlet for this company's creative process. There were a limited number of these printed, although they were not individually numbered or signed. Once I run out of them, they will no longer be available. CONDITION: This image was packed and stored flat for many years. It is crisp and clean, with a bright contrasting black and white image. The paper is high quality, showing no yellowing or foxing. SHIPPING: As this is an individual image, I take great care in packing and shipping your purchase. Your image will either ship USPS first class mail, or Priority (your choice) mounted on a cardboard backing and shipped within a large envelope. Either way, the image will be protected against bending or creasing.
