Item description

The Lumberjack Frontier The Life of a Logger in the Early Days on the Chippeway Retold from the Recollections of Louie Blanchard by Walker D. Wyman With the assistance of Lee Prentice Publication Information: University Of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, (Copyright 1969 by the University of Nebraska Press). DJ price is unclipped. Additional Information: 88 pages. Illustrated with a few sketches and a photo section. Illustrated lining papers. Summary: The Chippewa, or Ojibwa, Indians were the first proprietors of the forest stretching across the northern parts of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Wisconsin pineries in the post-Civil War period are the setting for these reminiscences of life on the lumberjack frontier. Louie Blanchard, born in 1872, grew up on the Chippewa River and went to work in the pineries at the age of 14. He retired to farm his homestead in the Cutover Country in 1912. He became known in the region as a great storyteller, and his recollections of lumberjack lore, tall tales and personal experiences constitute an informal social history of the lumberjack frontier. Condition: Hard cover, covers show faint wear and faint soiling; bottom page edges have some soiling; name on front inside lining paper; text is sound and clean; overall good plus copy.
