Item Description

Mother Goose’s Melodies The Only Pure Edition Containing All That Have Ever Come to Light of Her Memorable Writings, Together with Those Which Have Been Discovered Among the Mss. Of Herculaneum. Likewise Every One Recently Found in the Same Stone Box. (Published by Munroe and Francis, Boston [circa 1835 - 1845], 1833) This copy published by: Boston: Munroe and Francis, ca 1843 First edition, early printing. ----------------------------- This is an early printing in brown cloth with a title label affixed to the front board (most of which is there). This is a fragile little volume, 5-3/4 “ x 4-3/4“ in size, 96 pages. The spine of the book is present but is tender at the edges where it joins the boards. There are hand-coloured iengraved llustrations on nearly every page. All the pages are accounted for, and have moderate scattered soiling. Page number seven has a small old newspaper clipping affixed to the left upper portion, the rear endpapers and verso of the rear free endpaper have clipped newspaper articles affixed to them. Small engraved book plate (of that era) of a previous owner is affixed to front fixed endpaper. Please see the photos. Bleiler notes in his bibliography in the Dover edition of Mother Goose's Melodies (Dover Publications, 1970) "the various Munroe and Francis Mother Goose books have been unexpectedly complicated in their printing history...each new copy examined adds further confusion.” Bibliographical study (which is complex) places this copy in the second of the Munroe Francis printings. Bleiler makes distinct comparisons of this book through type damage (as well as in text changes) and mentions that in the "Dover Edition" of this book that the dot is missing "on the second 'sing' in 'Sing, Sing' " on page 11, thus indicating that the type indicating that the type was worn down. The copy offered here has the dot present (please see my photo) lending indication that this is most likely an early printing. Here are additional points of a very complex cataloging of this book, which are found in this copy: The Boston imprint of Munroe and Francis; page 2 has "Billy", unlike Hamilton but as found in Brown and Dover; The Illustration on page 36 is upside down, as in the Hamilton and Rosenbach copies, but corrected later, So this printing is apparently after the "Brown" version but precedes the Dover Variety; Page 11 the text reads "Sing, Sing!", with the final period, this period noted as lacking in the Dover Edition (mentioned above); Pages 55 and 84 have the illustrations that Bleiler notes as present only in the "earlier" Munroe and Francis printings. Page 12 Has "Bye Baby Bunting", as found in the Dover edition, and not like "Hi Diddle" found in the Brown edition. The illustrations are in four colours; Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red and and lacking the fifth colour, orange...all these points indicate that this book is an early printing. The illustrations in this book are in good condition and are hand-colored as originally published. The title page that the rhymes were found "in the same stone box as the Golden Plates of the Book of Mormon.” Please see the photo of the title page. A good copy with wear from the ages, of an important, rare edition of an early Mother Goose book, ca 1843. ------ Thank you very much for looking. If additional photos are needed, let me know.
