Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this lovely view of the famous painting, "The Adoration of the Shepherds" by the Renaissance painter Giorgionne, published by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Giorgione (born Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco; c. 1478 โ€“ 1510) was a Venetian painter of the High Renaissance in Venice. Giorgione is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are acknowledged for certain to be his work. The resulting uncertainty about the identity and meaning of his art has made Giorgione one of the most mysterious figures in European painting. The National Gallery of Art is a national art museum, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and was established in 1937 for the people of the United States of America by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, with funds for construction and a substantial art collection donated by Andrew W. Mellon. The Gallery's collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas and the largest mobile ever created by Alexander Calder. The Gallery's campus includes the original neoclassical West Building designed by John Russell Pope, which is linked underground to the modern East Building designed by I. M. Pei, and the 6.1-acre Sculpture Garden. Exhibitions spanning the world and the history of art are presented frequently, and the gift shop offers numerous poster sized reprints and reprints on postcards for visitors to purchase. The front of this card features a full color view of this famous art piece by Giorgionne with two shepherds kneeling before the Christ Child with Mary and Joseph kneeling behind the infant, in the doorway of the cave-like stable. There is a white border along both the left and right hand sides of the art work. The back is a divided back postcard which has no stamp box. The upper left bears the info for the National Gallery and the lower left bears the Title of the painting, the artist, and the owner. There is a brief message written in the message area however this card was never mailed. This card is in excellent condition with the exception of a strip of cellophane tape along the top which was used to mount it to something. The corners are crisp and sharp and there are no folds or creases nor any extraneous marks other than the message written in the appropriate space on the back. This card will be a nice addition to your collection of Art related postcards, views from the National Gallery of Art and postcard sized reprints of famous pieces of art.
