MOST water supplies contain hardness minerals (Calcium and Magnesium). These minerals form a scale and create problems in water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers, humidifiers, and plumbing systems. This modern and efficient water conditioning system will remove calcium and magnesium from your water eliminating all these problems. We use high quality, high capacity resin to give you a system that will give you excellent results. With a LIFETIME WARRANTY, you never have to worry about softening resin! THIS unit comes with the Autotrol Performaa„ "On-Demand" control valve, which has a LIFETIME WARRANTY on the valve body, so you can buy with confidence! The Autotrol Logixa„ controller is easy to use and provides a user friendly interface. These units save you money by measuring your water usage and regenerating as you need it, ensuring that your system regenerates only when it needs to, saving you on the cost of salt and conserving water! SAY goodbye to white, scaly build-up on your kitchen and bathroom fixtures, kick back and relax as soap scum build-up is reduced, and enjoy luxurious, improved soap lather in your showers! Save even more by using less soap for washing, and by protecting your plumbing before its too late. Problems? We offer excellent phone and email support for any problems or questions you might have. What is a water softener? A. A water softener is a special filter that uses a process called ion-exchange to remove water hardness, also know as CaCO3, from your water. As the water passes through the softener, univalent sodium or potassium ions on the softening resin exchange with divalent calcium and magnesium ions in the water, eliminating water hardness. Eventually the media in the softener (called softening resin) has exchanged all of its sodium or potassium ions, at which point it will no longer be able to remove any more water hardness. This is why the system regenerates. During this process the system runs a brine solution (water and either sodium or potassium chloride) backwards through the softening resin. This concentrated solution forces the trapped calcium and magnesium ions off the resin and down the drain, replacing them with the sodium or potassium ions needed for softening. With the Fleck 9100 control head, this process is automatic, and only done as needed! Q. Are there systems that don't use salt? A. Yes, there are systems out there that can condition your water without salt, some better than others. A standard salt based softener is the only type of system that will actually remove the calcium and magnesium from the water, but there are water conditioners available that can alter the calcium and magnesium into an inert form, eliminating the problems usually associated with hard water (scale build up, loss of soap and detergent efficiency, soap scum build up). Our No Salt Scale Sentry systems use a specialized media that acts as a catalyst, converting the electrically charged calcium and magnesium ions into neutral crystals (more about the process can be learned in the Scale Sentry listings). There are various other systems out there that claim to be able to condition the water without salt, but in our experience the results are not very satisfactory, and we have had customers replace such systems with one of our systems. Q. What does the grain capacity mean? A. Water hardness is usually measured in grains per gallon (gpg). (Some places use parts per million [ppm] or milligrams per liter [mg/L]. To convert your ppm or mg/L to gpg simply divide by 17.1 [Example - 200ppm or mg/L is equal to 200 / 17.1 = 11.7gpg]) The grain capacity of a system is how many grains of hardness your system can remove before it needs regenerated. A 48,000 or 48k water softener will remove 48,000 grains of water hardness. From that you can determine how many gallons of water you can go through between regenerations. For example, if you have a 48k softener and your water is 50gpg hard, you can go through 48,000/50=960 gallons of water before your softener is exhausted and needs regenerated. On a dual tank system, you can use the full capacity of each tank, since the Fleck 9100 control head will automatically direct the water to the other tank, regenerating the exhausted one so it will be ready to soften the water again. Q. Do I need a dual tank softener? A. That depends on your water hardness, water requirements (how many gallons you use every day), and the time you need water. If you use water 24 hours a day, then yes, a dual tank system is for you. If you have a minimum 2 hours period where water is not being used, you may not need two tanks, continue reading to determine if you still need one. Determine your water hardness, and divide it into 96,000 (the largest single tank residential unit we sell). (For example, if your hardness is 50 grains per gallon [read the next question for information on how to convert ppm or mg/L to gpg] 96,000/50=1920). This is the number of gallons you can treat before the system regenerates. If you use close to or more than calculated (in the example, if you use about 1800 gallons every day or more), you will need to use a dual tank system. The only other reason to use a dual tank system is efficiency, since the system regenerates the exhausted tank immediately, you can use the full capacity of the system, whereas on single tank systems you will calculate in a reserve that may not be used, (usually of 100-200 gallons) this ensures you have soft water until the system can regenerate Q. What kind of maintenance does this system require? A. The only regular maintenance a water softener requires is adding salt to the brine tank, and occasionally cleaning the brine tank. Q. Should I be concerned about the salt a water softener puts in my water? A. No. The amount of salt put into your water by a water softener is minimal. In fact, it is low enough that water ran through a softener is still considered "low-sodium" by the FDA. If you want to ensure that no additional salt is put in your water, all our water softeners can be used with potassium chloride instead of the traditional sodium chloride. Another option would be to add a reverse osmosis system under your sink for drinking water, which will effectively remove 90-97% of all contaminates, giving you bottled quality water at your fingertips! Q. What size system do I need? A. There are 2 main factors in determining the size you need: water usage and water hardness. Here is a general guideline on sizing your system: a32k system - 1-2 people, average water use and low hardness (under 15gpg) a48k system - 3-5 people with average water use or moderate hardness (15-45gpg) a64k system - 5-7 people with average water use or high hardness (45-65gpg) Always size a system based on water usage first, a system undersized for your water usage may not always filter effectively and will wear out faster. Feel free to contact us for help with sizing your system. On Oct-07-09 at 17:05:58 PDT, seller added the following information: SquareTrade AP6.0
