Item Description

Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was born August 2, 1834, in Colmar, a small town in the Alsace region of France. After the early death of his father, his family moved to Paris. There he studied architecture and painting, while spending summers at the family home in Colmar. Although he continued to paint throughout his life, his talent for sculpture led him to begin a distinguished career in which he would create some of the world's most noted monuments. Bartholdi, who had served as an officer during the Franco-Prussian War of 1879, was greatly impressed by the courage of the French as they defended their freedom, and likened that bravery to that of the American patriots during the Revolutionary War. Freedom became his greatest inspiration, and his finest works are celebrations of those who fought to preserve it. During a five-month visit to the United States in 1871, Bartholdi traveled all across the nationโ€”from New York to Boston, to Philadelphia, Washington and across the continent to San Francisco. He was impressed by all that our country had achieved in its first hundred years of freedom, and became entranced by the American spirit and ideals of courage and liberty. Returning to France, he began what would become his most famous work, Liberty Enlightening the World, known to millions as the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps the most recognizable monument in the world, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States, commemorating 100 years of American freedom. The United States Postal System (USPS) honors Frederic Auguste Bartholdi by issuing these beautiful stamps and this official American Commemorative Panel. The stamp commemorating Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was issued on July 18, 1985, in New York, New York, and was designed by Howard Paine of Washington, D.C. Mr. Paine based his design on a portrait of the sculptor which hangs in the Bartholdi Museum in Colmar, France.
