Item description

One Woman's Story by Carolyn Beecher 1919 A. L. Burt One Woman's Story Carolyn Beecher New York: A. L. Burt Copyright 1919 401 pages Black and white frontispiece The binding is in good condition, the end papers are browning. The pages are clean but tanned, there are no names or other markings. The cover is very rubbed, has some stains and is edge worn. Good. Hardcover. Chapter 1: I was very young when I married Robert Drayton, very young, very foolish, and at first, very, very happy. The winter after my coming out, Bruce, my oldest brother, brought Robert Drayton home with him for the holidays. I thought him rather too serious at first, but as soon as he commenced to notice, then to show admiration for me, I began to like him, and to encourage his attentions.... Robert had the charming manners of those born to ease; and his broad education had enhanced their charm. He was full of courage and confidence in himself, though he had never been obliged to depend on his own resources. A wealthy uncle paid for his education. With Bob's easy, graceful manners there was also a certain sternness. Life, experience, would never break him. He would never pick up broken pieces of his own life. He might smash others, never himself. All this I knew long afterward.... (#0000868)
