It was no ordinary wagon train that set out for the West from Nauvoo, Illinois. More than 20,000 Mormons were on the march. There had been mappers, trappers, gold seekers, but the Mormons settled the Valley of the Salt Lake, irrigated the desert, built homes, schools, churches. Here is the story of the first 1,600 English Mormons who walked the last 1,400 miles, pushing handcarts made of hickory, making 26 miles a day, going hungry to grease the wheels with their bacon. On the way West, one group joined the army to fight Mexico. They ended their trip by cutting the first road from Santa Fe to the coast. Half-naked, half-fed they tramped in double file ahead of the wagons to make tracks for the wheels. They hoisted wagons over the mountains with crowbar, pick ax, rope. Within a few years, the Mormons helped open an area of six states for settlement. Multiple orders add .50 Per Book for combined shipping costs.
