AB = bottom of the box, CD = longitudinal bar, E = handle, EF = horizontal harbor, G = wheel, H = wheel, M = elliptic plate, O = comet, L = plate of unequable motion, N = ball, NO = radius vector, KL = elliptic plates. BOTTOM: Cometarium by W. Jones, optician in Holborn Cometarium is a machine for the purpose of exhibiting and explaining the eccentric motion of a comet. Fig. 1. ABCD is a mahogany box, 9 x 12 x 4 1/2", x is a comet, dark elliptical space is a groove representing the orbit of the comet, a-perihelium, g-aphelium, one turn of handle N, moves the comet over one of the areas aSb, bSc, etc. The elliptical orbit is divided into twelve signs, fig. 2,3. inside wheel revolving on an arbor placed out of center, G-brass wheel about 5" in diameter, HI-bent arm with an oblong slit, a-sliding piece, K,L-wheel pivoted into a bridge P, O-Cock, CD-oblong piece of mahogany, AB-inside bottom of the box.
