Item description

We are pleased to be able to offer for your consideration this impressive Real Photo Postcard view in Black and White of an American Warship fighting the high waves in the stormy North Atlantic. The RPPC is an AZO postcard stock paper which was available from 1918 until 1930. One can determine this by the stamp box, which has triangles in the four corners and two are pointed up and two are pointed down which were made between 1918 and 1930. Additionally, judging by the superstructure of the ship in the view one can narrow it down to the mid 1920's or earlier, as there were no emplacements for anti-aircraft weapons, which would have been more in line with weaponry of the 1930's and later. The front of the card features a black and white view of the vessel as it is underway and sailing away from the perspective of the camera. The waves between the camera and the vessel seem to be in the 20 to 30 foot range with the winds predominating from the right hand side. At the bottom of the picture is the caption, "Fighting the Billows in an American Man-O-War." The back of the card is a divided back RPPC with the AZO box bearing two up and two down triangles, no division line and the card was never posted in the mail. This card is in excellent condition with crisp sharp edges, no crazing and no creases. The sky is faded from age and the silvering has migrated to the surface of the photograph. This item will be a great addition to your collection of RPPC's of the sea, views of Naval vessels underway, and ships plying the open ocean in stormy weather. It will also fill those hole in your collection of AZO Postcard stock prints.
